Summer break is a season kids look forward to all year—and rightfully so! But without the routine of school days, it’s easy for things to slide into chaos. That’s why creating a sense of structure during summer is key for kids’ well-being—and your sanity.

Here’s how you can keep your family on track while still enjoying the freedom summer brings:

1. Build a Flexible Schedule Together

Sit down with your child and design a daily or weekly schedule that balances structure with fun. Include time for:

  • Structured activities (like sports or creative activities)

  • Household chores

  • Free play and screen time

Letting your child help create the plan gives them a sense of ownership and makes them more likely to stick to it.

2. Make It Visible

Post your schedule in a central spot, like the fridge or a frequently used hallway. Use checklists or colorful charts to track daily tasks and goals. Not only does this add a bit of fun, but it also builds independence and accountability.

3. Keep Mealtimes & Bedtimes Consistent

While it’s okay to relax a bit, sticking to a regular routine for meals and bedtime helps kids feel secure and well-rested. A predictable rhythm supports better moods and smoother transitions—something every parent can appreciate!

Think: Later than the school year? Sure. Total free-for-all? Maybe no.

4. Empower Kids Through Planning

Get your child involved in planning the week ahead—meals, outings, activities, even chores. When kids have a voice, they’re more engaged and excited about what’s coming up, and they're less resistant when it's time to clean their room or brush up on their math.

Bonus Tip: Let the Y Be Part of Your Plan!
