YOUTH & GOVERNMENT

Join Student delegates in grades 8-12 from all around the state as they form Model Assembly delegations in local YMCAs and high schools.

Students research and discuss state issues.  After extensive preperation, participants draft legislation, prepare legal case briefs and write news articles.  Then they meet at the Capitol and the conference hotel for four days of intense debate, building lasting friendships and having fun during the Model Assembly Session.

Youth delegates elect their legislative, executive, judicial and press officers for the next year at the Model Assembly Session.  Students get engaged in the voting process by voting by district in a polling place using real voting booths and ballot materials.

In early November each delegationmeets for a Regional Training event.  The day-long training includes opportunities for delegates to watch mock trials and debate sessions as well as learn how to fulfill their role at the Model Assembly Session.

Youth delegation officers, advisors and other leaders participate in workshops throughout the program season.  Staff and volunteers provide leadership preparation and training.

Minnesota YMCA Youth in Government is a charecter development program empasizing the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, and is sponsored by the YMCAs of Minnesota.
